Problem! Sam currently has to take a detour route when he drives from his house to work. The detour route takes him 6 miles North, then 8 miles West. The North Carolina DOT is currently constructing a road that will take Sam directly to and from work. How many miles will Sam save round trip once he is able to take the new direct route?
Make sure to remember that! : There is 6 miles to the North & then 8 miles West. And to remember that you have to find out how many miles that he will save.
To work out this problem you can make a right triangle put your two numbers on the sides and leave one side of your triangle blank. Let me show how it's suppose to look like.
Also remember that you only need to use your base and your height of the triangle!
The height of the triangle would be 6 miles and the base is 8 miles. With those numbers you're suppose to square the numbers.
Ex; 6x6= 36 8x8= 64.
After sqaure rooting them, you must add them together!
When you get your answer 100 you also must have to square root that number too.
As you see there are 2 side lengths but one does not have anything.
The sqaure root of 100 is 10. So 10 will be the missing side length.
Now that you know your missing side length, you're going multiply 6 by its self which is 36.
Same thing with 8 just multiply it by its self, which is 64.
After that you had 36 and 64 together eqauling 100. Sqaure root 100, that would of course be 10. Going back you add 6+8=14.
When you get 14, you had 14+14= 28 10+10=20 SUBTRACT THOSE TWO NUMBERS. coming down to your final answer which is 8.
