THE 5 SENSES
Hazy air creates suspense by making the character more fearful about their surrondings, because it's hard to see what is around the next corner.
Crazy laughter creates suspense because it can be coming for all directions. If they are in a old house or a echoing house, then the laughter can be heard from different parts of the house, for a longer period of time.
Suspenseful music, such as that used by Alfred Hitchcock, makes the heart beat faster, expecially when there is a scene with no other sounds! Minor chords and repetive, jarring noises are especially creepy because someone or something may just jump out from the darkness and scare us.

The Tilted Angel
" The Tilted Angel" gives off a very eerie feeling. This is a painting by John. V. The painting shows a tilted angel at the end of a very misty water side. There is a graveyard between a mist-covered body of water and a very old broken down church. One of the grave markers, at the edge of the water was once a tall, straight angel, now leaning at an abandoned angle. The graveyard is as derelict as the angel. There are dark grey clouds almost covering the bright full moon. With the moon's light shining down on the water, the painting gives a dark and scary feeling. There is moss hanging from the trees, the yellow grass and the broken fences, add to the sense that the graveyard is ancient. There is also a feeling that someone is watching you, or the shadows are. It's a very creepy picture, and I think this is what John. V. was going for.
"The Bonfire" shows a painting of a group of kids making a bonfire. This fire goes very high in the sky. They are burning books and clothes. All the people surrounding the fire are wearing costumes. There are fairies, devils and witches. There is a very dirty road that gives the impression that it's halloween. The full moon glows above the bonfire glowing even brighter with the light from the fire. The bonfire leaves a sense of anger and fear in the audience for the painting. What will happen? There is no protection around the bonfire.
"The Homecoming" is a very dark and gloomy painting of a corpse bride going to meet her husband in the old castle that is just ahead. The painter definently got the right idea of what a scary picture should look like. In the painting, the sky is purple with a glowing full moon in the background. The moon lights the path for the dead bride floating in a white veil towards a distant ghostly castle. Her white train is tattered and blowsey, but still shows the same elegance as if the bride were still alive. The mist around the bride makes her look transparent...maybe she is!!! The combination of light and darkness makes the scene even more scary. I would not want to be caught seeing this bride coming towards me; I would be paralyzed with fear.
