Writers use many discri[tive things to try and creep the readers out. Some examples are: darkness, sounds, sudden flashs of light or describe images of things that would creep or disturb the reader.
They aslo use the five senses by adding discriptive smells, tastes, feelings, sounds and sights
a "pungent" stench or a "rancid" taste
"clanking" sounds or "slimy" feel
