Why was he attacked?
Case was attacked simply because the bear was hungry. He was big enough to feed the bear off and maybe that's the reason why the bear attacked him, thinking he was a food.
How did he survive?
He played dead, enduring the excruciating pain he was feeling. As soon as the grizzly bear left, he ran toward his car, which was nearby. Then he drove 25 kilometers, to a nearby gasoline station to ask for help.
