I have recently been hired as a paraeducator, and I was wondering what my responsibilities will be.
As the Special Education teacher, I have a plan set up for all of the paras. Your first responsibility is to have some knowledge of the students you will be working with. You may be working in a one-on-one situation or in small groups. How does that sound so far?
That sounds okay. Is that all?
Oh yes, you will also assist the teachers with behavior and assessment plans. I will also have you document student performance on the sheets I will provide.
You will also be expected to assist the classroom teacher in many ways, including: organizing and maintaining supportive and safe learning environments, behavior management and collaborating to determine the most ideal learning environment for all students.
Wow, that seems like quite a bit. Am I actively involved in assisting students? That sounds like the best part.
Oh yes, you are an active member of a student's learning. You may also need to attend IEP or other meetings. I am your direct supervisor for students in special education. Classroom teachers and administration are also your supervisors.
You also said I will work with the teachers in a collaborative effort. I think that is a great idea. Working with the teachers seems like it would be the best for the students.
