What happened? How can I help?
We were arguing...
then, he made a comment that upset me.
What did he say?
He said he would "get his coon dogs after me."
How did that make you feel?
I feel embarassed and angry.
Would it be okay with you if I ask him to come talk with us?
Yeah, that would be okay.
Did you make this comment?
Do you know that the word "coon" can be used as a racial slur?
So, you can understand why he is upset?
Not really. I mean, he is not even black.
He is biracial.
What does that mean?
One of his parents is white, and his other parent is black.
Oh, I didn't know.
Please do not use the word "coon" again.
Okay, I'm sorry.
I'm not sure what else to say.
What I learned from this experience
My generation's culture has taught me to be aware of cultural and racial differences, and to embrace them.
It was my assumption that my students would notice racial diversity and embrace the differences between themselves and their peers.
I learned that there are young people who are unfamiliar with racial diversity and may need guidance on appropriate behaviors.
