What Is IMPERIALISM ??
Imperialism is basically when an empire was forming; there was a new empire on the way. Specifically, it is the creation and/or maintain- ance of an economic, cultural, and territorial relationship that is not equal. Based on the domination and subordination of the state, the state(s) form an empire.
Imperialism had some motivations which were....
They also had western advantages and they were....
1. Well-organized governments and powerful armies and navies
2. Superior technology, which included riverboats for trade. They also had the telegraph
3. Thet got better medicines and better medical knowledge. This was very important beacuse it was one of the most important roles to them.
These medicines helped Europeans survive through very serious diseases, which they call deadly tropical diseases
Berlin Conference (1884-1885)
The Berlin Conference was an event that they had to provide permission to the European nations to wrest control of Africa from the natives, in other words, they wanted to take Africa apart. They had two options. It was either the aid of diplomacy, or, they went to them with weapons. During the conference, Africa remained under traditional and local control. On November 15, 1884, 14 countries were represented by a phletora of ambassadors when the conference opened in Berlin.
The Suez Canal
The Suez Canal is a sealevel water way in Egypt. This waterway connects the MediterraneanSea to the RedSea. After 10 years of construction, it was opened was opened on November,1869. It allows ships to go through Europe and eastern Asia without navigation around Africa.
Sepoys were Indian soldiers that were in a army called the Bengal Army . Some Indians came to believe that the british intended to convert them either by force or by deseption to Christianity.
Balance of Trade
The difference between the value of the total imports and total exports of a country as assessed over a fixed period .
When a country buys things from another country more often rather than tradng things with them
An economic measure of a positive balance of trade, whre a country's exports exceeds it's imports .
During the late 1700s, British merchants strated to make huge profits by trading opium war with the Indians for Chinese tea. Chinese tea was a very addicting drug. In 1839, Chinese warships crashed with Britain merchants, triggering the Opium War. British gunboats, equipped with the latest in firepower, bombarded Chinese coastal and river ports. With outdated weapons, they easily defeated China
Tainping Rebellion (1850-1864)
The Taiping Rebellion was probably the longest and most devatating peasant revolt . Hong Xiuquan, the head leader of this war, told them to end the most hated dynasty, the Qing dynasty . They won control of big parts of China for 14 years . The Taiping Rebellion almost crushed the Qing dynasty. During the rebellion, Europeans kept pressure on China, and Russia seized lands in the North .
The Box Uprising was a violent anti-Christian movement which took place in China towards the end of the Qing dynasty. Which was between 1989 and 1900. In 1899, the Chinese invented a secret society . They were called the Righteous Harmounious Fists. Westerners would watch them training in the martial arts. Their goal was to be better then the "foriegn devils", another secret society. The reason for that was that the "foriegn devils" were causing pollution to their land with their ways that were NOT Chinese, their weird looking buildings, machines, and their telegraph lines.
