OMG teachers wnt 2 use social media in da classroom... lol?
I think it will make learning fun!
Social Media = The interaction and exchange of information amongst a group of people on a global scale via the Internet
How could social media be used to benefit Education? AND How do we assess the benefits of social media within the classroom?
Potentially, these three social medias could be utilised within a classroom setting, as each social media holds a different purpose and presents information in ways that differ from those we are traditionally used to
Social Media can be used in numerous ways for numerous reasons
YouTube, Facebook and Pinterest are all examples of diverse forms of social media
48% of 18-24yr olds check Facebook as soon as they wake up
Facebook is essentially a sharing platform
The site allows users to create personal profiles where photos, videos and commentary about everyday life are shared via status updates
If you take the purpose of Facebook into consideration, you can begin to understand how it could be used in an educational context...
Students could collaborate on projects using private messages to shape concepts and build on ideas
This could be done without the teachers and students having to be friends with each other, and therefore does not necessarily break any school rules.
This is EXACTLY how our group created this presentation
Whilst Facebook can be used to share information with other students, It can also be used to access information
The "Facebook in Education" page Currently has... 621,000 likes
The page is dedicated to "Providing information about how educators can best use Facebook"
If a student
pages that post educational content,
their newsfeed may become a place where new information can be discovered at any time! Teachers should encourage their students to LIKE their school on Facebook as well as museums, art galleries, politicans, environmentalists and other educational pages of interest
YOU'RE A STAR
Whilst Facebook can be used to share information, YouTube can be used to find information
YouTube allows individuals from all over the world to post or search for videos on every topic you can possibly think about... YouTube now has a whole section dedicated to videos that contain educational content
YouTube could be utilised as a unique tool for teachers - by using the search engine at the top of the page, teachers could search for material relevant to the topic being taught. These searches are likely to return a plethora of videos related to the topic which could be accessed in order to increase students understanding
On the flip side, it also presents the opportunity for teachers to create online video tutorials for students if need be.
The videos chosen may be documentaries, how-to guides or anything deemed educationally beneficial!
Often you are able to access material that is not readily available in the form of DVD or VHS
Whilst teachers can use YouTube to source videos that may be beneficial for student learning
They could use Pinterest to create inspiration boards for what information, activties and assignments they could assign particular topics
Pinterest - Education
Pinterest is an entirely new ball game in terms of its use in education
Teacher's could pin material they deemed helpful
Furthermore, teachers could view other educational pin boards to gain inspiration for their own boards
- classroom setups - activities - inspirational quotes - tutorials - how to posters
We NEED to technologically revolutionise the educational system
Social media encourages and motivates students to work together and collaborate on ideas, as well as to research and learn outside of the school's walls
By using social media within the classroom we CAN benefit education
Given students are so accustomed to social media they are likely to be more willing and eager to engage in lessons that incorporate these sites
My students are improving day by day!!
By taking advantage of social media, we are taking the opportunity to connect with students in a way that has never been done before!!
As social media is becoming such an integral part of everyday life for young people, it's only logical to integrate social medias into the education system where possible
The proliferation of social media is a fact teachers must face
This IS the future...
Who knows, maybe education will be totally revolutionised
as a result of incorporating social media into the classroom...
FOR THE BETTER
The benefits of using social media within the classroom can already be seen
For the most part
