Imperialism at its Finest

1) What is imperialism?
Imperialism is the take over of a strong nation over a weaker nation. The strong nation takes the weaker nation because the strong nation needed its natural resources.
2) What were the western advantages that helped their ability to takeover other areas of the world?
The western advantages were that they had better weapons, transportation, and medicine than the other nations.
3) Describe/Teach about the Berlin Conference.
The Berlin Conference was a meeting where the European countries decided to split Africa into colonies for themselves. No one from Africa was invited to represent Africa at the Berlin Conference.
4) Explain what the Suez Canal is and why it is an important water route.
The Suez Canal is a water route that connects the Red Sea and the Meditteranean Sea.This water route is used for ships in Europe traveling to Asia or vice versa. The Suez Canal cuts traveling time by almost 50%!
5) What was the Sepoy Rebellion and what change in how Britian took over in India came from it?
The Sepoy Rebellion was a rebellion that was started by the India-born members of the british army. They rebelled for one purpose and one purpose only; because the oil used in the army came from beef and pork. This went against Hindus and Muslims. After the rebellion was supressed by the british sending troops to India, Britian's government took direct control of all of India.
Balance of Trade
Balance of trade is when a country exports the same amount as it imports.
Trade Surplus is when a country exports more than it imports. China
Trade deficit is when a country is importing more than it is exporting. The U.S.
This war was a result of the British importing opium into China. The Chinese government tried to stop them but failed. As a result of this war between China and Great Britian, the chinese had to open their five ports to trade with other nations.
The Taiping Rebellion was a civil war in China. The cause of this Rebellion/War was to overthrow the Qing Dynasty out of Power.
The Boxer (Righteous Harmonious Fists) Rebellion was a movement that was anti-foreign and anti-christian. The Qing Dynasty supported the movement at first but later betrayed it by switching sides. The rebellion ended with an army made of seven different countries vs. the boxers.
