What was the
last mistake I made?
PROBLEM: Coworkers handgrading bubble-in test answers
MY ATTEMPTED SOLUTION: Automate task with Excel spreadsheet.
Mistake 1: Assumed everyone hated handgrading.
The Reality: Coworkers were fine with handgrading.
The Reality: Coworkers hated Excel.
The Reality: Students were confused how to read the score reports.
Mistake 2: Didn't get user feedback.
Mistake 3: Pushing an incomplete (not pretty/intuitive) solution on others.
What would I have done differently?
Ask coworkers what would help with their grading process.
Check students understood their score reports.
Factor in the time and effort needed to make finishing touches.
How did I teach myself to
play the harmonica?
1. Start Small
I used a generic children's book. Was it the best introduction possible? Yes, because at least I started.
2. Always Practice
Practice everywhere. Annoy everyone. Practice silently.
3. Use Technology
I slowed down Youtube videos. I looked up songs online.
4. Find Intrinsic Motivation
I love always having something to do. Playing the harmonica helps with breath control and singing too. Big Mama Thorton and the Beatles are pretty cool.
