Gender Wage Gap
Does it really exist?
For every dollar men make,
That is a lot of money!
Where does it come from?
Women work lower-wage jobs. Almost two-thirds of the country’s minimum wage workers! They often have to halt their career to take care of their family, this impacts their earnings significantly!
Men were twice as likely as women to work more than 40 hours a week and women almost twice as likely to only work 35 to 39 hours a week. Taking that into consideration, the pay gap begins to shrink. Women who worked a 40-hour week earned 88% of male earnings.
The 23-cent gap is the difference in average earnings of all men and women working full-time. It does not account for differences in occupations, positions, education, job tenure, or hours worked per week.
The AAUW report compares male lawyers with that of female librarians. That is not a comparison between people who do the same work. With more realistic categories and definitions, the remaining 6.6 gap would certainly narrow to just a few cents at most.
