The [unconstitutional] Patriot Act
By Nadeen Aladham
In October of 2001, the US Congress passed a law that gave law enforcement agencies increased powers to monitor phone calls, emails, and track users of the internet.
Fourteen years later, it's time to call for the revoke of this unconstitutional act
The Patriot Act directly violates the Fourth Ammendement which says the government cannot conduct a search without a warrant
The Act also violates the First Amendment by authorizing launch of investigations of American citizens in part for exercising their freedom of speech.
Senator Rand Paul described the Act "unpatriotic" and "a direct violation of our Bill of Right"
Studies have shown that the expanded phone call taps and search are used in ordinary criminal investigations, not just in terror cases
