Reasons Why Scary Stories Are Scary With Poe's Tell-Tale Heart
The reasons why stories are scary are because, they are creepy and gothic. They have a creepy setting, creepy characters, gothic scenes, sounds and feelings.
The setting in the story are really dark, and the atmosphere has a cold feeling. Like the house in The Tell Tale-Heart, Poe described the house as old and dark. Not the best place someone would want to be living or being in.
This would be the house Poe has described. It has a creepy atmosphere.
The suspensful moments also makes a story scary. The narrorater usually talks really slow, and becomes panicked so starts to talk really fast! then BOOM! something pops up. When something gets suspensful the narrorator pauses in the middle of what they say. Thats called an ellipsis '...' the three dots.
Characters are usually as creepy as their setting. Like the mental man in The Tell-Tale Heart. You could tell the young man was mental while reading the story. Talking about the old mans eye, acting like he was normal, you knew on the inside he was dying because of the old mans "weird eye." Especially at the end when you knew the man has past, but he could here the beating heart of the old man, cause of he felt guilt.
Sounds and touch also part of the atmosphere. Sounds can make things fun as much as making the surroundings scary. Like hereing creeking things like an old door, or having branches break off a tree. Touch makes things creepy. Its just like having something touch you, without having anything there. For instance in the dark, your're not afraid of the dark, but of what is inside it. You feel like something is there... but is there?
