What makes a story creepy or scary?
An author can make a story creepy right from the start by using juicy adjectives to describe an eerie atmosphere.
menacing, sinister, ominous, threatening, unpleasant, dreary, forbidding, creepy, gloomy, or somber.
Words such as
A very important thing to add when writing a scary story is a scared protagonist running form something it could be a ghost a human or anything that seems scary.
Sight: It was so dark in the room, all I could see were the dozens of pairs of eyes staring ghoulishly at me from every direction.
Feel: Suddenly my entire body aches like a thousand wasps are stinging me and then instantly I am on the ground and the only thing I can feel is the cold, grimy sidewalk and hands dragging me from the street in to a large black van.
An author should also use creepy or eerie words that will ignite the 5 senses.
Some example sentences for each sense are:
Smell: I can smell the smoke in the air as the flames grow higher, and ever hotter in my apartment while the man with the lighter walks down the staris and out of the building.
Remember human imagination is the best and easiest tool to use when writing a scary story.
Hear: As I woke up from my sound sleep I heard high pitched shrieks and screams coming from the hallway and then nothing... only the eerie silence.
All of those words can and should be used to also describe characters, buildings, and objects in the setting to help create a creepy and detailed atmosphere.
Taste: I could taste the blood in my mouth from biting my lip so hard as I watched the ghostly figure move across the room.
Remember that there are many different types of scary stories like: gothic, sci-fi, and fantasy.
One of the most important things to remember when writing a creepy story is that the greatest fear of all is the fear of the unknown.
In this picture you notice that it is very dark and you can not see much except a few trees and the strange creature.
Obviously the creature is photoshopped or just a normal human dressed in a costume but because of the small amount of detail the picture lets our mind think that it is a monster or alien.
Just like that picture sometimes it is a good thing to only have a smaller amount of detail in scary stories so that it lets the readers minds wander and create the fear ourselves in our own imagination.
