Imperialism is the taking-over of a smaller country by a superior country. These dominating countries extend their influence to the conquered. They coveted power and wealth.
The western advantages were that European powers had well-developed and sturdy economies, government and armies. As well as advanced technology, medical knowledge, and weaponry.
In 1884, a conference was held in Berlin,Germany. Where European powers discussed who would get which parts of Africa. However, Africa was not invited to the conference. They came to the conclusion, if you didn't have a govenment office set up anywhere in Africa you couldn't claim land. Concluding in the scramble for African land.
The Suez Canal was an important water route, it made travel easier. This waterway connected the Meditteranean and Red seas, shortening travel from Western Europe to the ports in East Africa and Asia. Like traveling from London, England to Bombay, India by this canal you saved yourself 5,150 miles of sea travel.
In 1857, Indians rebelled against the British the cause of this was animal fat in guns to operate them. The religions of the Muslims prohibited pig and Hindus held cows a sacred animal, so they refused to use them. During the rebellion many Indians were killed including women and children. After the rebellion India was put directly under the British government's rule.
Balace of trade:A country's difference between the amount of products it imports and exports.
Trade surplus: When a country has an overflow of products it exports compared to the products it importing.
Trade deficit: When a country imports(buys or brings in) alot more than it exports(sends out)
In the late 1700s, Britain was gaining big money by trading opium, a highly addictive drug, for tea from China. The economy was disturbed with the constant silver flowing out of China for this drug.Opium was then outlawed, however British merchants refused to accept this. They went to war and with superior weaponry Britain won. They gained control of Hong Kong and its many ports.
During 1850 to 1864, poverty and misery led peasants to rebel against the Qing dynasty.Between 20 and 30 million were killed, and the Qing dynasty almost collapsed. However Europeans pressured them and the government crushed the rebellion. In the end people were devastated; Russia had gotten its hands on lands in the north.
In 1899, a secret society was formed called the Righteous and Harmoneous Fists dubbed Boxers. They were against christianity and foreign influence. Attacking foreigners across China. An international force was used to rid of them. The Boxers weakend the Qing dynasty, and dethroned the kid emperor also making China a republic.
