Civilians from Srebrenica crowded into the compound after the Serbian bombing, expecting refuge. The Dutch, however turned the refugees over to the Serbs, who promised aide. The Serbian soldiers took the men and boys to a secluded spot on the side of the road and began killing them by slitting their throats and executing them with their pistols, thus beginning the Srebrenica massacre.
