June 26, 1948
U.S. & British pilots began delivering food & supplies by airplane to Berlin after the city is isolated by the Soviet Union.
When Germany was defeated in WW II, it divided into Soviet, American, British & French zones. Allies took the western part of the city & the Soviet the eastern part.
4 Zones in Germany
Josef Stanlin's government attempted to consolidate control by cutting land & sea routes to West Berlin in order to pressure allies to evacuate.
U.S. President Harry S. Truman's administration called for a military response to the Soviet's movement Instead, he authorized a massive airlift operation under control of General Lucius P. Clay, the American-Appointed military governor of Germany.
Let's use the military against them!
No, I'll do a massive airlift operation instead, Gen. Lucuis, you're in charge.
