The North's geography had a lot to do with their trading and the items they traded. Due to their climate and how their climate is Northerners had short growing time. This meant that they had to resort to using other resources to trade instead of crops. Northerners traded timber and fish.
The techniques we used in the 1800s are still like the techniques we use today. The Northern states are still not used for producing crops, that is what California and Florida do. The Nothern states still produce things like automobiles and things like that because the North still does not have the best growing climate.
