New Imperialism is the period of colonial expansion. The motivations for imperialism were to conquer and exploit the resources of various countries to gain wealth and power.
Some of the advantages that western had were strong economies, well-organized governments, and powerful armies and navies. They also had superior technology including riverboats, telegraph, medical knowlege, Maxim machine guns, and steam driven warships.
The Berlin Conference
The Berlin Conference was called to avoid bloodshed. The conference was at an international conference in 1884. It took place in Berlin Germany and no africans were invited. The rush to colonize Africa was on.
The Suez Canal is a waterway that is more than 100 miles. It connects the Mediterranean and Red seas. This shortens the travel distance from Western Europe to ports in East Africa and Asia.Construction on the canal started in 1859 and took 10 years to complete.
The Sepoy Rebellion
The sepoys rose up against the british because they were forcing the sepoys to bite off the tip of the cartridges before loading it into the gun. The cartridges were greased with animal fat and that went against the sepoys religions. The british rallied and crushed the revolt.
Balance of Trade
Balance of trade is the difference between amount a country imports and the amount it exports.
Trade surplus is when a country exports more than it imports.
Trade Deficit is when a country imports more than it exports.
The british merchantswere making huge profits trading opium grown in India for Chinese tea. The chinese outlawed opium, they asked the britain to stop the trade. Chinese warships clashed with the britain merchants and that caused th opium war. Since the chines had outdated weapons they were defeated.
The Taiping Rebellion lasted from 1850 to 1864. The rebels won control of the large parts of china and held out for 14 years. China with help from regional governors and generals, the government crushed the rebellion.
A group named the "Righteous Haemonious Fists" formed in 1899. They were called boxers because westerns' saw them training martial arts. Their goal was to drive out the "foreign devils" polluting their land with un-chinese ways. Boxers attacked foreigners across china. The western powers and japan's multinational force crushed the boxers.
