What is Imperialism ? 'New Imperialism'
Imperialism is a country gaining power. Two motivations for
Imperialism were Economic and political. Economic motives involved the
desire to make money and export technology and transportation methods.
Political motives depended on a nations desire to gain power and to expand
Western advantages that helped their ability to take over other areas of the
world was that the land they took over showed another country that they had
power. Another advantage is that the occupied land could also be helped to
evolve the Western Countries.
The Berlin Conference was a conference where the nations of Europe would
come together to divide the continent of Africa. All fourteen countries that
attended, agreed that no country could take control over any area.
The Seuz Canal is a waterway that connects the Mediterranian and red sea.
The Seuz Canal is an important water route because it allows transportation
and it had an impact on world trade.
The Sepoy Rebellion was a rebellion by the native indian soldiers. They rebelled
because they found out that the rifles that they were issued had been greased
with animal fat. This led to the end of company rule over India and forced the
British to take control over the country.
BALANCE OF TRADE-the difference in value between a countrys imports and exports
TRADE SURPLUS-the amount by which the value of a country's exceeds the cost of its imports.
Balance of trade is the biggest component of a countrys balance of payments
Trade surplus is how much money a countrys exports exceeds.
TRADE DEFICIT-the amount by which a country's imports exceeds the value of its exports.
Trade Deficit is the amount of something thats being imported exceeds the value of something being exported.
The Opium Wars were between china and western countries. Opium was an addictive drug that the british had smuggled into china. This drug grew and the british did'nt stop trading it. So the opium war began.
China eventually had the british take control because they lost the war.
The Taiping Rebellion was a massive rebellion that devastated much of the country. About 20 million people died during the Taiping Rebellion. Peasants were lead by Hong Xiuquan and fought against the Qing Dynasty.
Boxer Uprising was an uprising in china that aimed to end foreign influence in the country. The Boxers attacked chinese christians first when they began to attack the foreigners in china.
