The people of Bhutan are predomintely Bhote, Tibetian speaking and practice Tibetian Buddhism. The other peoples, the Gurung, speak Nepali and follow Hinduism.

Density and Distribution
The people live mainly in the south, as the Himilayas have an unfavourable climate for living.
Although little is known about Bhutan's early history, around 800 is when Buddhist monks fled Tibet.
Toward Modern Times
In the early 1600's, a Tibetian lama consolidated his power over both religious and political realms. Civil war and chaos occured until the layte 1800's, when Britain established sovereignty over Bhutan.
