It's all about your Perception
Exploring Digital Etiqutte and Online Cruelty
A basic set of rules you should follow in order to make the internet better for others, and better for you.
We can make the internet better by......
Remembering that it's always important to show
...and by considering everyone's perspective
I wanted to see Digital Etiqutte in Action
So I got 10 middle schoolers together...
I had them listen to the story of the three little pigs as told by the pigs as well as by...
Needless to say...they were surprised to hear the wolf's side of the story and to realize
that he isn't such a bad guy
Then I had them log-on to Twitter and read all of the terrible rumors and lies the pigs were spreading
via the internet
"That old wolf is the meanest wolf I've ever met!" @threelittlepigs
"That big fat wolf tried to eat me!" @threelittepigs
"That ugly, old wolf is gonna get what's coming to him!" @threelittlepigs
"The wolf got a bad rep for just trying to get some sugar from the pigs cuz he had a cold. I thought that wasnt right. I think someone should stop the pigs from being mean and set the story straight."
This made my students really sad....
They put their heads together, figured out ways to be upstanders and
" We decided to talk to the three little pigs' mother and let her know what the pigs were doing to the wolf online. When she found, she said, "Not by the hairs of my chinny, chin, chin they wont! She stopped them right in their tracks!" -Upstander
"We decided to stand up for the wolf! We created a facebook page to stop hatred against the wolf. We don't think he is bad, people just don't understand him." -Upstander
"My group decided to be meditators. We got the pigs and the wolf together in the same room and had them all explain their side of the story. We thought it was important that the pigs understood the wolf's motive. We also wanted to the wolf to understand why the pigs were angry. We just wanted everyone to be friends."
"Our students need to know that in situations of online cruelty it is not enough to be innocent, it is important to stand up for what is right."
I'm inclined to agree.....
