You will look at How do Australia's global connections impact our military?
1.What are the global connections that relate to the Australian Military?
USA, New Zealand Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan
Australia is connected with the United States military as part of the ANZUS treaty and has been in place since 1952. In 1986 the three-way treaty stopped because New Zealand decided it did not like having USA nuclear warships in their harbor so since then Australia is connected with both the US and New Zealand with separate treaties. Australia has military agreements with Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia and holds training exercises with these countries. Australia is also connected with fourteen other countries to fight terrorism. The treaty with the USA means Australia gets to have access to the strategies that America uses and does not have to spend money making our own. It also means other countries want Australia to help protect them as they know Australia has a defense force that is good enough for the USA to be partners with. The other reason Australia has the treaty with the USA is because if Australia was ever invaded by another country, Australia would expect the USA to help either by sending troops, ships and planes or by helping with the advice and strategy of how to fight the other country

How does being a small military with partners like America and Britain impact negatively on the Australian military?
Because Australia is connected to the USA it is expected to have a large defense force and build and spend lots of money on our military. This means Australia has to spend more money per person that we might otherwise choose to. It is expected that other countries that Australia has connections to such as New Zealand, would put pressure on the Australian military to help if an event happened that threatened their country. Australia may not be ready or but due to our global connections we would force us into a state of war. Australia is heavily influenced by the USA in what weapons we buy. This means that we also have to buy and maintain our weapons from them. There may come a time when Australia will have to choose between out largest trading partner China and our big military brother USA which will mean Australia will lose whichever way we choose to go. .
