What Is Islam?
Who is a Muslim?
The word muslim means one who submits to the will of God A Muslim is someone who follows the five pillars of Islam and accepts the fact that there is one God (Allah) and Muhammad (P.B.U.H) is his messenger.
The Five Pillars Of Islam...
Shahadah This is the first pillar of Islam. "There is no God but God and Muhammad is the Messenger of God." This statement shows a Muslim's total commitment to Islam.
The second pillar of Islam is Salah (prayer) This is led by an imam and helps Muslims communicate and worship with God (Allah) The 5 prayers are Fajr, Zohr, Asr, Maghrib and Esha
The third pillar of Islam is Zakaat (purification) This is when charity is given to the poor. Evey indivisual calculates his/her's zakah
The fourth pillar of Islam is Saum (fasting) This happens on the 9th month of the islamic calender. It helps Muslims remember the poor and a chance to ask forgiveness from Allah.
The Fifth pillar of Islam is Hajj This is when muslims visit the house of Allah (Ka'abah) and wear white to show everyone is equal
Islamic Festivals: Eid Ul Fitr and Eid Ul Adha are the two main Muslim festivals. The first Eid was celebrated in 624 CE by the Prophet Muhammad with his friends and relatives. Eid Ul Adha remembers prophet Ibrahim when he sacrificed his son when God ordered him to. God appeared in a dream to Ibrahim and told him to sacrifice his son Isma'il. Ibrahim and Isma'il set off to Mina for the sacrifice. The devil had said to them to disobey God and not to sacrifice his beloved son. But Ibrahim stayed true to God, and drove the devil away. As Ibrahim prepared to kill his son God stopped him and gave him a sheep to sacrifice instead. This is why we celebrate the second eid today.
Prayer And Worship
Muslims pray in mosques. Outside every mosque, or just inside the entrance, is a place where worshippers can remove and leave their shoes. Everyone sits on the floor and everywhere in the mosque is equal in status.
