What you can expect from the Victim's Code
Being a victim of crime can often be a distressing and confusing experience. But, we want to make it easier and clearer for you, as well as offer you as much support as you require.
The Victims Code is a document which the police, courts and other justice agencies must follow from the moment you report your crime, through to the end of any legal proceedings.
Under the Victims Code, we will support by: • Being kept informed about the investigation into the crime • Telling you if a suspect is arrested, charged or bailed • Being informed of what to expect if you need to give evidence in court • The ability to apply for special measures in court, for young or vulnerable people • Being told if an offender will be released, if they have committed a violent or sexual offence against you • Having the ability to apply for compensation • Allowing you to sit down with the offender and tell them the impact their crime has had on you • Being able to complain if you don’t receive what you should
