Jefferson City hasn't always been Missouri's capital, until 1821 when it was declared the capital of Missouri. In 1840, the population of Jefferson City was about 1,174, including around 300 slaves. The building we now call the capital building was dedicated in 1924. The capital building now is the third capital building Missouri has had, the other two were destroyed.
